Happy July 24 Release Day!

Happy Friday, and happy release day for two artists that are not usually considered indie these days, but I am going to allow given the circumstances: Taylor Swift's folklore   and MisterWives' SUPERBLOOM . Both dropped albums at midnight (this morning), and while the MisterWives album was expected this week with singles already announced, both were a surprise midnight release today, day-of. AND, both albums have every song title listed without any capital letters (except SUPERBLOOM's last track, SUPERBLOOM ).  I have been lucky enough to see both acts live before, so this is a true quarantine treat. Taylor Swift's folklore  had zero singles before the release, and there are a lot of celebrity guests involved behind-the-scenes, including Aaron Dessner from The National , my fave Jack Antonoff ( Bleachers ), and Bon Iver, who features on track 4 of the album, exile (the best song):  She also had official videos ready for every song...her mind.  seven is also...

"The Breeze" by Dr. Dog: a Ten Year Anniversary

In 2008, Dr. Dog, a band with a compelling pop-psychedelic sound released their fifth record, Fate. This track, "The Breeze," especially showcases their "home-recording" production style and 60s-throwback vibe. The band is best known today for their cover of "Heart it Races" by Architecture in Helsinki from 2007, but "The Breeze" is an unappreciated gem. The beginning guitar part and the many seventh chords are beautifully nostalgic, and each instrument and musical element is layered on top of the base melody, one at a time, creating a (sorry) beautiful cacophony of sound. Every bass line and vocal harmony is clean cut, and the song itself is different from other ballads of the same category. Blue Madonna by BØRNS is fire!

BØRNS's second studio album, Blue Madonna, was released on January 12, and has received mixed reviews. BØRNS continues to craft synth-pop anthems with major-minor pattern shifts, but the band adds more instrumentation in their second album to create very catchy songs. BØRNS continues to master the art of slightly staying under the radar while conquering mainstream pop vibes when needed.
